Why do wisdom teeth need to be removed?
Wisdom teeth are often referred to as third-molars. These are the teeth that do not grow in until sometime during the teen years or early adulthood. They are located at the very back of the mouth and, for various reasons, often do not grow in properly. We may suggest wisdom teeth removal if these molars are not growing through the gums (impaction), if one or more has partially grown in, or if any negative impact on adjacent teeth or the jaw is possible.
What makes wisdom teeth removal different than standard extraction?
Most standard tooth extractions can be performed without having to cut through the gums. Wisdom teeth, particularly in the lower arch, are held by bone tissue that may be denser than it is at the front of the mouth. Wisdom teeth also may have multiple roots that sit at odd angles, requiring more attention to the extraction process.
Are all wisdom tooth extractions difficult?
Actually, most wisdom teeth can be extracted without a problem. Even impacted wisdom teeth may be removed in about an hour. The entire treatment time may be slightly longer to provide time for anesthetic and sedation as well as a short recovery period.
What is the extraction procedure like?
Wisdom teeth removal is often performed with nitrous oxide or oral sedation. These techniques facilitate a calm, comfortable treatment process. Once the sedative has taken effect, a local anesthetic is administered to numb the back of the mouth. Access is made with a small incision in the gums. Though this, the tooth and any bony tissue in the way of it can be removed. The process is simple and performed with gentle technique.
Is there an ideal age for wisdom teeth extraction?
There is a bit of debate about the ideal timing for wisdom tooth removal when there are no symptoms that indicate problems. Some believe that there is no reason to remove these teeth if they are not symptomatic, while there may also be value in preventive removal sometime during the teen years. This timing may facilitate a faster recovery. Preventive removal also allows more control over the literal timing of treatment, such as during a less busy time of year.
One of the most relevant reasons to consider preventive wisdom teeth extraction is to avoid the problems that may occur. Often, wisdom teeth invite what we call silent complaints. These include decay, gum disease, and cysts. If x-rays confirm the presence of wisdom teeth, speak with your dentist about the best timing of removal in your case.
What is recovery like after wisdom teeth extraction?
Post-surgical pain and complication are two common concerns after wisdom teeth extraction.
- Pick up your prescription pain medication before the day of surgery. Take this medication as directed, even if you are not uncomfortable when you return home from our office.
- You may apply ice for a few minutes at a time to manage swelling and comfort.
- Eat soft foods for the first several days to avoid disrupting the clots that form in sockets. Also avoid hot beverages, alcohol, and soda.
- Rest as much as needed. Sleep helps your body heal more quickly.
- You may need to change gauze pads frequently during the first day or two to control minor bleeding.
- The entire recovery period is usually complete within 7 to 10 days.

What is “dry socket” and what do I do if I get it?
The term “dry socket” refers to the loss of the necessary blot clot in a socket after tooth extraction. This clot is what covers the bone beneath the socket so, if it becomes dislodged, pain is likely to occur.
Dry socket is a relatively rare complication, occurring in only about 15% of wisdom teeth extractions. If this were to occur, you would need to come into the office to have medicated gauze applied to the socket to facilitate healing.
